VVTA gets final destination
HESPERIA • A new state of the art facility to house some 200 Victor Valley Transit Authority employees is set to open its doors on Monday.
“It's on 10 acres and will meet our needs for the next 25 years,” said VVTA’s Executive Director Kevin Kane.
The new 28,820-square-foot administration and operations building compliments the new 15,750 square foot maintenance facility as well as a CNG fueling station.
Kane said the agency has been working on getting a new facility since 1992. In 2006 VVTA's engineers put a hefty $42 million price tag on the project, then slated for construction on the corner of Ottawa and Hesperia roads. VVTA parted ways with the design company. With the slump in construction and housing, the cost dropped to $19 million.
The new building, on the corner of Avenue E and Smoketree Street, was originally slated to open last summer. While construction on the building has taken a few months longer than expected, the CNG fueling station has been open since 2009 and has cut the fuel costs for the transit authority in more than half, said Kane.
