Wasilla councilman facing recall over destructive trip
ANCHORAGE - A recall petition has been certified against a Wasilla city councilman who trashed a motel room in Sitka last summer.
The City Clerk's Office said it certified the recall petition Thursday against Steve Menard with 203 signatures. KTUU reported the proposed recall election is proposed for Feb. 7, but the City Council will set the official date when it meets Dec. 12.
The Conservative Patriots Group sponsored the recall petition. The group began collecting signatures soon after Menard's business trip when he racked up more than $350 in hotel cleaning fees.
Menard apologized for his behavior and is no longer allowed to travel on city business. The hotel charged for a burned mattress, vomit on the carpet, urine on furniture and evidence of smoking.
