The vaccine would introduce a particle — with nicotine molecules attached to it — into the body, which then would recognize it as a pathogen and build defenses against it.

Normally, nicotine from a cigarette enters the lungs, then the bloodstream, which takes it to the brain. But in a patient who has been vaccinated, antibodies would meet the nicotine molecules and bind to them in the bloodstream before they reached receptors in the brain that trigger pleasurable responses. And that would prevent the pleasurable effects of smoking.

The same idea has been applied in the development of a vaccine to treat addiction to heroin and cocaine. For about 20 years, researchers have been trying to create the nicotine vaccine, with mixed results.

"The first time I had heard about this, I was surprised," Burkhard said. "'A nicotine vaccine — how would that work?' Then I thought, 'Well, maybe, that's a pretty smart idea.' "

At least 10 other research teams around the world are working on a nicotine vaccine, each with slight variations. Burkhard said it's essentially a race to see who comes up with one that works. In 2009, the Swiss biopharmaceutical company Cytos Biotechnology's vaccine failed clinical trials. In July this year, the vaccine developed by Nabi Biopharmaceuticals of Maryland also failed in late-stage trials.
