Confusion still swirls around new 'Drano law'
State Rep. Jack Franks says “Drano law” is a misnomer for regulations that went into effect Jan. 1.
“The ‘Drano law’ doesn’t include Drano,” said Franks, D-Marengo. “I think this has been blown totally out of proportion.”
Others say the law has had unintended consequences, such as confusion over which products require buyers to sign a registry.
Under the new law, when customers buy certain products, they must provide a valid driver’s license or other government-issued identification showing their name, date of birth, and a photograph.
They then must sign a log documenting their name and address, the date and time of the transaction, the brand name, the product name, and the net weight of the item.
But exactly which products qualify has caused confusion.
Rob Karr, senior vice president of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, said there is a two-pronged test for which products fall under the law.
