According to the British Dental Association, 25 per cent of people are afraid of visiting the dentist, so the friendly face of community pharmacy means you will probably be the first port of call for many customers suffering from toothache.
As well as advising your customers to steel themselves for a visit to their dentist, in the first instance you could recommend they try the traditional remedy of dabbing clove oil on the affected area to relieve the pain. Clove oil has been long used for the relief of pain caused by tooth decay and cavities as a result of its natural anaesthetic and antibacterial properties.
Anglian Pharma's Dentogen Clove Oil Gel, for example, is a sugar-free gel for the relief of toothache caused by dental cavities.
It can be safely used alongside other medicines and is suitable for use by children, adults and the elderly, although it not recommended for very young children or infants, or where an abscess is suspected.
Linda Pearson, Dentogen customer services adviser, says: "Advise your customers to apply Dentogen either using the tip of their finger or with a cotton bud so that the gel can be easily placed directly on the point of pain; a small amount will be as effective as a larger quantity. A cotton bud will also make it easier for users to avoid getting the gel on their gums or skin, which can cause irritation. It is also important to remind customers to visit their dentist as soon as possible so that the underlying problem can be properly addressed.
